After the American Civil War, members of the American Gun Club envision an extraordinary project: creating the largest cannon ever and using it to shoot a man-made "bullet" to the moon. Published in 1865, the story was once considered pure fantasy, but it captures the imaginative spirit behind early ideas of space travel.
