Kidnapped at Sea

"Kidnapped at Sea" by Andrew Sillen recounts the true story of David Henry White, a free Black teenage sailor kidnapped during the Civil War and held captive for over 600 days. The book critically examines how White's life was falsely portrayed in postwar narratives to support the Lost Cause mythology, revealing the truth through a forensic approach. It is the first work to focus directly on White’s experiences, challenging established myths and highlighting the impact of racist fabrications on Civil War memory.
