Fifteen-year-old Amadou works tirelessly on a cacao plantation in the Ivory Coast, counting the number of pods he and his younger brother, Seydou, chop daily as their only hope of safety and freedom. Trapped in forced labor with an unclear debt, they navigate the harsh realities of their situation until the arrival of Khadija, a spirited girl determined to escape. As their lives intertwine, the group's resilience is tested, prompting Amadou to confront the possibility of running away in pursuit of freedom for himself and his brother.
