In this compelling exploration, a property law scholar examines how racist policies and predatory governance have historically weakened Black families and contributed to the racial wealth gap, using the stories of two Detroit grandfathers—one Black, one white—as a focal point. What begins as a study of Detroit’s squatting phenomenon uncovers a broader, systemic issue of community destabilization and inequality that extends nationwide.
