Francis Bret Harte, born in 1836, was a prolific American writer known for his contributions to the short story genre and tales of the Old West and the Gold Rush, which helped shape American literary history. Starting his writing journey early, he faced initial setbacks but eventually gained fame through his diverse literary talents, including poetry, plays, and journalism. Throughout his life, Harte traveled from California to Europe, continuing to write and publish despite changing audiences, until his death in 1902.
