William Sydney Porter, known as O Henry, was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1862. After a diverse career path that included roles as a pharmacist, draftsman, and journalist, he began writing stories while facing personal tragedies, including the loss of his son and the declining health of his wife, Athol. His life took a dramatic turn when he was arrested for embezzlement, leading to a prison sentence that became a productive period for his writing. Released early, he went on to become a prolific author, publishing over 600 short stories until his health decline in the late 1900s led to his untimely death in 1910.
