Dispossessing the Wilderness

This work explores the complex origins of American national parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Glacier, highlighting how the ideals of preserving untouched wilderness are intertwined with historical policies of Indian removal. It provides a nuanced examination of the native histories of these landscapes and the conflicts between indigenous peoples and preservation efforts. As the first study to connect national park history with the early reservation era, it reveals how these parks became key sites of contention throughout the twentieth century.
