The Dark Lady's Mask tells the story of Aemilia Bassano Lanier, a talented and independent woman in Renaissance London who defies societal expectations through cross-dressing and her pursuit of creative freedom. Her chance encounter with the poet Shakespeare leads to a secret collaboration and a passionate affair in Italy, which ultimately ends in heartbreak.
