In this gripping tale, Jack Hare, a young man from New England, embarks on a journey to the West and finds himself in peril in the Utah desert. Rescued by August Naab, a Mormon patriarch, Jack discovers the challenges of ranch life, facing threats from cattle thieves and a corrupt rancher intent on stealing water rights. Complicating matters, Jack falls for Mescal, a half-Navajo shepherdess promised to Naab's son, prompting him to pursue her as she escapes.
