A Journey North

Between May 21 and June 16, 1791, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison embarked on a horseback journey through Upstate New York and New England, exploring the challenges of unity amid regional and political divides. Their trip included significant encounters, such as a meeting with a free Black farmer that shed light on their views on slavery and race, and discussions with the Unkechaug tribe, which inspired a long-term vocabulary project for Jefferson. This journey not only strengthened the bond between the two future presidents but also laid the groundwork for their influential partnership in American history.
