Set in the summer of 1860, this audiobook recounts the harrowing journey of 110 men, women, and children from Benin and Nigeria, brought to Alabama as the last recorded group of enslaved Africans in the United States aboard the Clotilda. The narrative explores their lives in West Africa, their capture, and the span of their enslavement, as well as their resilience in forming a community called African Town post-emancipation. Here, they preserved their cultural identity through customary laws and language, leaving an enduring legacy that connects to their descendants today. The story commemorates the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
