Hitler's Soldiers

Ben Shepherd's book explores the German army during World War II, offering a comprehensive and nuanced view across all theaters of combat and occupied areas. Drawing on primary sources and recent scholarship, it examines the army’s composition, performance, and its involvement in war crimes, challenging earlier perceptions of the institution as morally separate from Nazi atrocities. The narrative reveals how the army's participation was integral to the regime's crimes, influenced by societal factors and leadership decisions, while also analyzing its battlefield successes and failures.
