The Town

The Awakening Land trilogy by Conrad Richter chronicles the dramatic shift of a middle-American landscape from wilderness to farmland and eventually to modern industrial society, all through the life of Sayward Luckett and her family in southeastern Ohio. Comprising three novels—The Trees, The Fields, and The Town—the series showcases Sayward's journey and the evolving fortunes of American pioneers during the tumultuous first half of the 19th century. The Town, the longest and most acclaimed of the trilogy, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1951 and highlights the transition of Sayward and her community from primitive beginnings to a settled, civilized existence.
