Banished from Johnstown

In "Civil Rights Injustice: The Johnstown Exile," author and journalist Cody McDevitt recounts a harrowing episode in 1923 when the mayor of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, ordered the expulsion of all African Americans and Mexican immigrants who had resided in the city for less than seven years. Facing severe penalties, approximately two thousand individuals were forced to abandon their homes at gunpoint, while the Ku Klux Klan celebrated the town's transformation into a "sundown town." Prominent figures, including Marcus Garvey, voiced their outrage alongside national media condemnations of this racial edict.
