Jellicoe's War

In February 1917, a fierce unrestricted campaign by German U-boats threatened Britain's maritime dominance, sinking 860,000 tons of Allied merchant shipping by April. Sir John Jellicoe, Britain's First Sea Lord, faced an urgent need for a revolutionary strategy in anti-submarine warfare, leading to the advocacy of the Convoy system, supported by figures like Prime Minister Lloyd George. Contrary to political myths depicting Jellicoe as an opponent, he recognized the necessity of enhancing destroyer escorts, with crucial assistance from America, paving the way for an Anglo-American mission that ultimately quelled the U-boat menace.
