Francis Bret Harte, born on August 25, 1836, in Albany, New York, was a pivotal figure in American literature, known for his contributions to the short story genre, particularly tales of the Old West and the Gold Rush. After a challenging start to his writing career at age 11, he settled in California, where his diverse experiences as a miner, teacher, and journalist fueled his creativity. Despite a decline in audience later in life due to relocation and changes in literary tastes, he continued to write across various forms, including poetry, plays, and magazine pieces, until his death from throat cancer on May 5, 1902.
