Joseph Conrad, born on December 3, 1857, in Berdychiv, Ukraine, navigated a tumultuous childhood marked by political upheaval and personal loss, becoming an orphan by age 11. Despite early struggles in academics and health, he embarked on a career in the merchant marine at 16, gathering rich experiences that would influence his later writings. Eventually settling into a life of literature in his mid-30s, Conrad produced a renowned body of work characterized by narrative mastery and profound psychological insight. He became a British citizen and remains celebrated for his significant contributions to English literature until his passing on August 3, 1924.
