When Mr. Burton Crane leases a country house, he expects a full staff but finds only a cook remaining after dismissing the other prospective servants. He relies on his friend Mrs. Falkener to help find suitable staff, though she harbors suspicions about them. As the story unfolds, questions arise about the true identities of the remaining staff and what secrets they might be hiding.
