Banished

In the first book of The Long Road Home trilogy, set in the early 1900s, siblings Obadiah and Merriweather find themselves orphaned and sent to live with their unkind Amish relatives on a cotton farm in Arkansas. As May struggles to maintain peace in the harsh environment, her brother Oba mysteriously disappears after enduring horrific treatment. In her loneliness, May encounters Clinton, a compassionate young black man, and despite societal barriers, they form a secret bond. Faced with escalating cruelty at home, May must decide whether to seek Clinton's help for an escape, all while grappling with her faith and the search for her brother.
