In this compelling reappraisal of Jagdverband 44, renowned Luftwaffe historian Robert Forsyth delves into the dramatic origins of the squadron formed by ace pilot Adolf Galland, following his contentious dismissal from the Luftwaffe's high command. As Galland sought to validate the revolutionary Messerschmitt Me 262 jet as a pivotal weapon in the war, he assembled a group of disillusioned fighter aces to operate against USAAF aircraft in Munich. Forsyth examines Galland’s motivations and the complex identity of the squadron, drawing on firsthand accounts from former pilots to offer a nuanced perspective on its legacy.
