Frontier sheriffs, elected to two-year terms, served as the primary peacekeepers in vast counties, often larger than New England states. Charged with defending settlers and safeguarding property against relentless violence, their duties included tracking down criminals, serving court warrants, and even managing domestic disputes. Beyond these responsibilities, they also handled mundane tasks such as jailkeeping, tax collection, and quarantine inspection.
