Saba Vasili, a scholar of the astral sea, is facing the dire accusation of murder after the malfunction of an arcane device he created leads to the destruction of a city district and the death of a foreign dignitary. Incarcerated by Byrengrad's ruling council, Saba catches the attention of Ambassador Luan Zek from the Rezwyn Empire, who begins to doubt Saba's guilt.
