In 1924 Los Angeles, sixteen-year-old Ruby Chan navigates the complexities of her modern life as a Chinese American girl facing traditional expectations. After her secret romance with a white boy is revealed, her parents hire a matchmaker to secure her future, prompting Ruby to resist their plans. As she befriends the pioneering film star Anna May Wong, Ruby finds inspiration in Anna's defiance of societal norms. Yet, with danger and betrayal lurking, Ruby must confront her identity and determine her own path in a world that seeks to define her.
