In a future where Earth has divided its populace into classes of citizens and non-gratis to manage population control, Charlie faces a life stripped of freedoms as a non-gratis. Prepared for the possibility of being assigned to colony work, she reluctantly accepts her role as a labor assistant in an exploratory lab on a hostile planet.
