Nineteen-year-old Penelope Fayre, a captivating figure of the Season, grapples with the pressure to marry wealth while yearning for a genuine connection. As the Season wanes, she makes a pact to accept the next suitor but first seeks adventure at Bartholomew Fair, where she meets the charming Philippe Valois, an itinerant swordsman. Their brief encounter takes an unexpected turn when she later discovers Philippe disguised as a footman at a hunting party intended for her betrothal. Meanwhile, Philip Markham is determined to reclaim his heritage, but Penelope's presence complicates his plans, leaving him uncertain of their paths' outcomes.
