Detan rescues the skilled engineer Nouli and returns to find his aunt's city besieged by Thratia's army. Together, they repel the initial assault, only to face the added threat of imperial forces and their elite magic users. In a bid to protect the city, Detan's aunt allies with Thratia, but Detan harbors his own secret ambitions, plotting to manipulate the outcome of the conflict to his advantage.
