The Muse of the Revolution

Mercy Otis Warren (1728-1814) was America's first woman playwright and historian, known for her pivotal role in creating anti-British plays that contributed to the American Revolution. As the wife of a Massachusetts patriot and mother to five sons, she secretly shaped public sentiment through her writings. During the early Federal period, she authored a significant pamphlet advocating for a Bill of Rights and in 1805, she published a unique Jeffersonian interpretation of the Revolution in her work, History of the Rise, Progress and Termination of the American Revolution.
