In 1836, 19-year-old Fanny Appleton, a socially privileged daughter of a Boston industrialist, embarks on a European tour with her family, indulging in the luxuries of elite society while nurturing a passion for education and literature. Meanwhile, the recently widowed poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow traverses Europe to gather research for a new publication, seeking renewed purpose after his loss. When their paths cross in Switzerland, both are drawn to the other's literary inclinations, sparking a complex relationship complicated by class differences and Fanny's doubts about their future together.
