The Berlin Mission

Raymond Geist, a US consul in Berlin during the rise of Nazi Germany, emerged as an unlikely hero, accurately analyzing the escalating threat posed by the regime. Arriving in 1929, he played a crucial role in facilitating the emigration of notable figures like Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud, while also securing exit visas for numerous unaccompanied children. Navigating his own complexities, including a hidden homosexual relationship, Geist courageously confronted the Nazi police state to protect American interests and individuals. Remaining in Berlin for a decade, he became the first American official to clearly warn about the impending horrors that would culminate in the Holocaust.
