The Book of Speculation

In Erika Swyler's debut novel, The Book of Speculation, young librarian Simon Watson grapples with family secrets and a haunting legacy after receiving a mysterious, water-damaged logbook detailing the fate of circus performers from the 1700s, including his mother, a circus mermaid. As he uncovers a chilling pattern of drownings that haunts his family, particularly one tied to the looming date of July 24, Simon races against time to protect his estranged sister Enola, who has embraced a life of fortune-telling at a traveling carnival. With illustrations by the author, this poignant tale weaves together themes of magic, family, and the profound impact of literature.
