In 1606, the English ambition to colonize America gained momentum with the establishment of the Virginia Company by Thomas Smythe, igniting hopes for gold and new settlements. However, the Jamestown settlement quickly faced dire challenges, including conflicts with Native Americans and internal dissent. To salvage the colony, a new leader, Thomas Gates, took charge, and in 1609, the largest fleet England had ever assembled set sail, only to be thwarted by a catastrophic storm that led to a serendipitous shipwreck in Bermuda, ultimately changing the colony's fate.
