Long before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors, the Timucua Indians thrived along the shores of southwest Florida, where the pristine Manatee River meets the Gulf of Mexico. Known for their resourcefulness, they gathered seafood and utilized the abundant land for sustenance and healing. The story of the present-day Coquina Madman emerges from this idyllic setting, instigated by the arrival of Hernando de Soto in 1539 and his relentless search for gold, weaving together past and present through the fabric of legend.
