China’s Good War

In "China’s Good War," Rana Mitter explores the evolution of China's collective memory regarding its World War II experience, transitioning from a focus on victimization to a celebration of victory as a cornerstone of rising nationalism. Initially suppressed, the war narrative has shifted significantly, influenced by academic discourse and public memorialization through various media. This reassessment not only rehabilitates key figures like Chiang Kai-shek but also positions China as a defender of the post-war global order, reshaping its identity and confidence on the world stage.
