How Did Black History Month Begin?

February marks Black History Month, an annual celebration honoring the achievements of African Americans, largely due to the efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the Father of Black History. Fueled by a commitment to rectify the neglect of African American contributions in historical narratives, Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926, which eventually transformed into the month-long observance we know today. His extensive research and publications spotlighted the significant but often overlooked roles of African Americans throughout history, leading to the federal recognition of Black History Month in 1976.
