Facing the threat of forced removal from their Florida homeland, the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes bravely resisted by taking up arms against the US Army. Utilizing the treacherous, alligator-infested swamps to their advantage, they managed to disrupt military efforts. When military victory proved elusive, General Thomas Jesup resorted to capturing his opponents under flags of truce. Ultimately, while most of their people were forcibly relocated, fewer than a hundred members of the tribe remained hidden in the Everglades, making them the only tribe in U.S. history never to surrender.
