The Sharing Knife, Volume 1

In "The Sharing Knife: Beguilement" by Lois McMaster Bujold, young, pregnant Fawn Bluefield flees her family's farm to the city of Glassforge where she encounters the mysterious soldier-sorcerers known as Lakewalkers. As Fawn learns about their dangerous battle against immortal magical entities called "malices," she is kidnapped by one of these creatures. In a twist of fate, it's Fawn who ends up defeating the monster, leading to a significant and unexpected connection between her and Dag, an older Lakewalker burdened by his own sorrows.
