In "The Fixer," Bernard Malamud's acclaimed 1966 novel, set in Kiev in 1911, Yakov Bok, a Jewish handyman, is wrongfully accused of murdering a young Russian boy amid a backdrop of intense anti-Semitism. As Bok navigates the harsh realities of his environment, he attempts to escape his identity and works for an anti-Semitic group, only to face dire consequences when he's arrested for a crime he did not commit. This powerful narrative intertwines themes of injustice and identity, reflecting Malamud's literary roots in Russian fiction.
