Millicent Min is struggling with her identity and acceptance as she navigates a summer filled with challenges, including being resented by her peers and dealing with family changes. To help her have a "normal" childhood, her mother enrolls her in volleyball and arranges for her to tutor Stanford Wong, a fellow student she finds insufferable.
