In 1890 Bedfordshire, Nell Reece, who has always felt the weight of her mother's absence and her father's guilt, finds herself pregnant and alone, forced to leave her troubled home behind. As she journeys across the countryside, she encounters Kit, a ten-year-old street orphan, and takes him under her wing.
