The Ballad of Peckham Rye

In "The Ballad of Peckham Rye," Muriel Spark presents a darkly comedic tale set in a blue-collar town disrupted by the arrival of Dougal Douglas, hired for "human research" by a local firm. As he infiltrates the private lives of the employees, including the head of the typing pool and the managing director, chaos ensues, leading to unexpected consequences for everyone involved. This wickedly farcical narrative showcases Spark's sharp wit and keen insight into human nature.
