Sister Style

In "Sister Style," authors Nadia E. Brown and Danielle Casarez Lemi examine how the political experiences of Black women are influenced by societal perceptions of their skin tone and hair texture. The book explores the unique pressures Black women face in politics, particularly the expectation to conform to standards typically associated with White women. Through focus groups and analysis of generational differences among Black female candidates, they reveal how these factors shape the self-presentation and electoral strategies of Black women in political spheres, as well as the responses from Black voters regarding their appearance.
