Discover the life and legacy of Omar Khayyám, a 11th-century Persian mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher whose poetic quatrains gained prominence long after his death. Initially obscured, his verses were popularized in 1859 by Edward FitzGerald's free adaptation, which resonated with themes of hedonism and skepticism. The Rubáiyát transformed into a cherished English classic, with its enduring appeal reflected in its fifth edition, published posthumously in 1889, incorporating FitzGerald's handwritten revisions.
