The Salt Roads

In this captivating narrative, set against the backdrop of the early 19th century Caribbean and beyond, a group of women gathers to bury a stillborn baby, inadvertently summoning Ezili, the Afro-Caribbean goddess of love and desire. As Ezili navigates time and space, she inhabits the lives of three women: Mer, a healer and midwife facing the trials of slavery; Jeanne, a mixed-race dancer in 1880s Paris; and Meritet, an enslaved prostitute in ancient Alexandria. Bound by their shared connection to Ezili and the struggles of their existence, these women confront a hostile world that shapes their destinies in profound ways.
