Marvin Deitz, facing pressures from his mob-connected landlord and a concerned therapist, is also grappling with the heavy burden of being the reincarnated Geoffroy Thérage, the executioner of Joan of Arc. His quest for absolution intensifies when he discovers a woman on a Los Angeles talk show claiming to be Joan. Hitchhiking to Los Angeles, Marvin encounters Mike Vale, a troubled alcoholic painter en route to his ex-wife's funeral. Together, they navigate a California landscape filled with ghostly apparitions, each on a personal journey toward redemption.
