"So Close to Home" recounts the harrowing true tale of the Downs family, who found themselves in a life-or-death struggle after their freighter, the Heredia, was attacked by a U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico during World War II. On May 19, 1942, as torpedoes struck the vessel, family members Ray Sr., Ina, and their children, Sonny and Lucille, were torn apart amidst the chaos. The narrative follows their desperate fight against the elements and their determination to reunite and survive the aftermath of this tragic event.
