In the wake of her mother's death and her father's abuse, Ella Parker navigates a lonely life steeped in privilege, leading her to the world of medicine through an eccentric ship surgeon. Aspiring to become a doctor in early nineteenth century England, she disguises herself as a man to circumvent societal barriers against women in academia. As she thrives in her studies and forms bonds with fellow students, including a kind but struggling tutor named Oli, Ella grapples with the risks of her deception.
