Affections

Affections follows the unconventional Ertl family, led by the flamboyant Hans, a former cameraman for Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl, as they escape post-World War II Germany for Bolivia. In search of the legendary Inca city of Paititi, Hans embarks on an ill-fated expedition with his two daughters, which sets off a chain of events leading to the family's gradual unraveling. Set in the tumultuous 1950s and 1960s, the narrative intricately explores the consequences of ambition and the shifting dynamics among family members, including Hans's adventurous daughter Monika, who becomes entwined with Bolivian Marxist guerrillas. Through this poignant tale, Hasbún examines how aspirations can fracture the bonds that once united a family.
