In 1864, amidst the despair of Lowell, Massachusetts, Asa Mercer embarks on a mission to find high-minded women to help populate the burgeoning town of Seattle, where men vastly outnumber women. Josephine, Dovey, and Sophronia seize the opportunity to escape their grim circumstances, but soon discover that the challenges they fled follow them into their new lives.
