In "The Bamboo Stalk," Josephine leaves poverty in the Philippines to work as a maid in Kuwait, where she encounters Rashid, an ambitious young man. Their youthful romance takes a turn when Josephine becomes pregnant, and Rashid, yielding to societal pressures, sends her back home. Their son, Jos, grapples with his multifaceted identity as he longs for acceptance in a country marked by fear and division. This poignant narrative explores the struggles of foreign workers in Arab nations while delving into themes of identity, race, and religion.
