Set in the Russian Caucasus of the 1830s, A Hero of Our Time explores the life of Grigory Pechorin, a self-centered and cynical army officer disillusioned with life. As he manipulates the affections of women and the goodwill of those around him, Pechorin's bravery and determination are undercut by his wasted potential, leading to tragic consequences. This novel features a complex, nonchronological narrative that has significantly influenced Russian literature and paved the way for modern antiheroes and antinovels.
